A. PURPOSE .BR ---------- .SKIP 2 THE PURPOSE OF THE BOUNDRY INDICATOR ADDITION IS TO DISPLAY A NUMBER THAT CAN BE USED TO POSITION THE CURTAIN AND LANE BOUNDRIES WITH RESPECT TO THE SLITTER KNIVES. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TIMING OF THE INSPECTOR SIGNALS AND THE PHYSICAL LOCATION OF THE CURTAINS, LANE BOUNDRIES, AND SLITTER KNIVES IS USED TO GENERATE THIS NUMBER. THE TEST DEFECT OPENING IN THE COLLECTOR ROD SERVES AS THE REFERENCE POINT. .SKIP 2 B. THEORY OF OPERATION .BR ---------------------- .SKIP 2 THE SIGNAL GENERATED AS THE LASER SCANS ACROSS THE TEST DEFECT OPENING IS USED TO START A COUNTER. THE COUNTER IS STOPPED BY ONE OF FOUR SELECTED SIGNALS, THE LEADING EDGE OF THE PEDESTAL PORTION OT THE CLAMPED PA SIGNAL, THE LANE 1-2 BOUNDRY, THE LANE 2-3 BOUNDRY OR THE TRAILING OF THE PEDESTAL PORTION OF THE CLAMPED PA SIGNAL. SINCE THE LASER SCAN TRAVERSES THE WEB AT APPROXIMATELY 3 USEC./INCH THE NUMBER IN THE COUNTER REPRESENTS THE DISTANCE FROM THE TEST DEFECT OPENING TO THE SELECTED STOPPING POINT. ALTHOUGH THE NUMBER IN THE COUNTER IS ACCUMULATED AND RESET ONCE EACH SCAN, THE DISPLAY IS ONLY UPDATED APPROXIMATELY 2 TIMES A SECOND. THIS PROVIDES A STABLE DISPLAY READING THAT AN OPERATOR CAN READ. .SKIP 2 C. INPUTS .BR --------- .SKIP 2 CLAMPED PA .SKIP LANE 1-2 BOUNDRY .SKIP LANE 2-3 BOUNDRY .SKIP END OF SCAN (EOS) .SKIP THESE FOUR SIGNALS ORIGINATE IN THE TRANSMISSION CHANNEL DRAWER. EACH SIGNAL IS BUFFERED BY A NAND GATE THAT DRIVES AN OPTICAL ISOLATOR LOCATED IN THE BOUNDRY INDICATOR UNIT. .PAGE

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION .BR ---------------------- .SKIP 2 REFERENCE: 2147M755 .BR 2318M755 .SKIP 2 FOR THIS CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION THE EOS SIGNAL WILL BE CONSIDERED THE FIRST SIGNAL IN THE TIMING CYCLE. THE EOS IS OPTICALLY ISOLATED FROM THE CHANNEL DRAWER BY CIRCUIT F2. THE OUTPUT OF OPTICAL ISOLATOR, F2-6, IS INVERTED AND NORED WITH THE INITIAL POWER ON SIGNAL TO GENERATE A RESET PULSE FOR THE CIRCUITS IN THE BOUNDRY INDICATOR UNIT. THIS RESET PULSE IS BUFFERED BY CIRCUITS E3-3 AND E3-6. E3-3 RESETS THE A5 UP/DOWN COUNTER AND THE ENABLE/INHIBIT FLIP-FLOPS, A3-6 AND A3-8. E3-6 RESETS THE COUNTERS LOCATED IN THE DISPLAY. .SKIP THE CLAMPED PA SIGNAL IS OPTICALLY ISOLATED BY CIRCUIT C1. THE OUTPUT OF THE OPTICAL ISOLATOR, C1-6, IS FED TO TWO ONESHOTS. B2-4 IS SET UP TO TRIGGER ON THE HIGH TO LOW TRANSITION AND B2-12 IS SET UP TO TRIGGER ON THE LOW TO HIGH TRANSITION. ONESHOT B2-4 GENERATES PULSES AT THE LEADING EDGE OF THE TEST DEFECT AND THE LEADING EDGE OF THE PEDESTAL PORTION OF THE CLAMPED PA SIGNAL. ONESHOT B2-12 GENERATES A PULSE AT THE TRAILING EDGE OF THE PEDESTAL PORTION OF THE CLAMPED PA SIGNAL. .SKIP THE LANE 1-2 BOUNDRY AND THE LANE 2-3 BOUNDRY SIGNALS ARE OPTICALLY ISOLATED BY CIRCUITS D2 AND E2 RESPECTIVELY. THE OUTPUTS, D2-6 AND E2-6, ARE INVERTED AND NORED WITH THE OUTPUTS OF THE ONESHOTS B2-4 AND B2-12. THESE PULSES FORM A PULSE TRAIN WHICH IS USED AS A CLOCK FOR THE UP/DOWN COUNTER A5. THE LOW TO HIGH TRANSITION OF NOR B3-6 CLOCKS THE A5 COUNTER AND THE HIGH TO LOW TRANSITION TRIGGERS ONESHOT C2-12. THE OUTPUT, C2-12, IS USED TO STROBE THE OUTPUTS OF THE 4 TO 10 LINE DECODER B5. .SKIP THE OUTPUT AT D4-4 OCCURS AT THE TIME OF THE TEST DEFECT. THIS SIGNAL IS INVERTED AND USED TO SYNCRONIZE THE START OF A BURST OF 10 MHZ CLOCK PULSES AT F5-6 WITH THE LEADING EDGE OF THE TEST DEFECT. .PAGE
SWITCH S1 DETERMINES HOW LONG THE BURST OF 10 MHZ PULSES LAST BY SELECTING WHICH PULSE IS USED TO RESET CIRCUIT F5-6. THE 10 TO 4 LINE ENCODER, B6, PRODUCES A BCD CODE WHICH IS USED BY THE 1 OF 8 MULTIPLEXER, C5, TO SELECT THE RESET PULSE. THE OUTPUT AT C5-6 ALSO TRIGGERS ONESHOT C2-13. .SKIP THE OUTPUT AT C2-13 GOES HIGH AT THE SAME TIME THE 10 MHZ CLOCK SIGNALS ARE STOPPED. THIS HIGH LATCHES THE COUNT IN THE COUNTER/DISPLAY UNIT. C2-13 IS SET UP TO BE A NON-RETRIGGERABLE ONESHOT. CONSEQUENTLY ADDITIONAL PULSES AT THE INPUT WILL HAVE NO EFFECT UNTIL THE OUTPUT HAS FULLY TIMED OUT, APPROXIMATELY 500 MILLISECONDS. THEREFOR, EVEN THOUGH THE COUNT IN THE DISPLAY UNIT COUNTER IS ACCUMULATED ON EACH SCAN, THE COUNT IS ONLY LATCHED AND DISPLAYED TWICE A SECOND. .SKIP FLIP-FLOPS A3-6 AND A3-8 ARE USED AS ENABLE/INHIBIT SIGNALS FOR ONESHOTS B2-4 AND B2-12. B2-4 IS ENABLED AT THE OCCURENCE OF THE TEST DEFECT AND INHIBITED AFTER THE OCCURENCE OF THE LEADING EDGE OF THE PEDESTAL PORTION OF THE CLAMPED PA.
