.COMMENT PAGE 23 THE CHANNEL DRAWERS CONTAIN THE ELECTRONICS, WHICH RECIEVE SIGNALS FROM THE OPTICAL UNIT AND PROCESS THESE SIGNALS TO DETERMINE PRODUCT QUALITY. A VENTILATING BARRIER PLATE DIVIDES THE DRAWER INTO ANALOG AND DIGITAL SECTIONS. THE ANALOG SECTION CONTAINS CUSTOM CARDS DEVELOPED BY THE ENGINEERING PHYSICS LABORATORY. EACH IS SEPARATED BY A GROUND PLANE CARD FOR ISOLATION. THE DIGITAL SECTION CONTAINS DIGIAL EQUIPMENT CORPORATION M SERIES LOGIC MODULES. DRAWERS CAN BE CHANGED BY REMOVING THE CABLE CONNECTORS ATTACHED AT THE REAR. SLIDES PERMIT THE DRAWER TO BE EXTENDED AND TILTED FOR MAINTENANCE. .SKIP 2 C.2 CHANNEL DRAWER POWER .BR --------------------- .SKIP EACH CHANNEL HAS ITS OWN ACOPIAN POWER SYSTEM CONSISTING OF TWO 3-A DC SUPPLIES THAT PROVIDE PLUS AND MINUS 21V FOR THE ANALOG SECTION; ONE 5 VOLT, 10 AMPERE POWER SUPPLY FOR THE DIGITAL SECTION, AND ONE PLUS AND MINUS 15 VOLT SUPPLY FOR THE PA CARDS, LOCATED IN THE PM HOUSING. DC POWER TO EACH DRAWER IS FED THROUGH EMI FILTERS AS IT ENTERS THE DRAWER. .SKIP 2
.COMMENT PAGE 24 C.3 ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE PROTECTION .BR ------------------------------------------------ IF EXTERNALLY GENERATED ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE (EMI) IS COUPLED INTO THE INSPECTOR, FALSE SIGNALS MAY BE GENERATED AND GOOD PRODUCT REJECTED. EMI CAN BE COUPLED IN THROUGH THE POWER LINES, SHIELDS OF SIGNAL CABLES, GROUND LOOPS, AND BY RADIATION THROUGH THE ATMOSPHERE. .SKIP THE CAREFULL ATTENTION GIVEN TO THE REDUCTION OF EMI IN THE INSPECTION SYSTEM HAS BEEN DEMONSTRATED TO BE AN EXTREMELY IMPORTANT ASPECT OF THE DESIGN. ANY INSPECTOR REPAIRS SHOULD BE MADE IN ACCORD WITH THE EMI DESIGN PRECAUTIONS DISCUSSED BELOW. .SKIP AC POWER FOR THE REMOTE CONSOLE IS FILTERED BY A HOPKINS ENGINEERING MODEL 1776-20-S2 LINE FILTER. .SKIP 2 THE DRAWER ENCLOSURE SHIELDS THE ELECTRONICS FROM EXTERNAL INTERFERENCE. TOP AND BOTTOM COVERS MAKE ELECTRICAL CONTACT WITH THE FRAME THROUGH CONDUCTIVE GASKET MATERIAL AND ARE FIRMLY HELD IN PLACE BY FASTENERS. A HONEYCOMB MATERIAL THAT ATTENUATES EMI PROVIDES VENTILATION. THE HIGH VOLTAGE METER AND INDICATOR LIGHTS ON THE FRONT OF EACH DRAWER HAVE EMI PROTECTIVE SCREENS. .SKIP 2 C.4 GROUNDING AND INTERWIRING .BR ---------------------------------- .SKIP EACH DRAWER HAS ONLY ONE PRIMARY GROUND. IT CONSISTS OF A HEAVY GROUND THAT RUNS FROM THE BACK OF THE DRAWER TO A GROUND BUS INSIDE THE CONSOLE. THE POWER SUPPLIES AND PM HOUSING ARE GROUNDED IN THE DRAWER. SIGNAL CONNECTIONS BETWEEN REMOTE AND MAIN CONSOLES ARE DONE THROUGH BUFFER CIRCUITS TO MINIMIZE GROUND LOOPS. ALL SIGNALS AND POWER CONNECTIONS ARE MADE WITH TWISTED PAIR SHIELDED CABLE. THE PA SIGNAL CABLE SHIELD PROVIDES THE GROUND CONNECTION FOR THE PM HOUSING. CABLE SHIELDS DO NOT CARRY SIGNAL CURRENTS. .SKIP 2

NONCRITICAL 115-VAC POWER, FOR SUCH THINGS AS BLOWERS AND CONVIENCE OUTLETS, IS WIRED DIRECTLY OUT THROUGH 15-A CIRCUIT BREAKERS. POWER FOR SUCH THINGS AS THE LASER, INSPECTOR LOGIC, ETC., IS BROUGHT OUT THROUGH A SEPARATE BREAKER TO AN ELGAR, MODEL 6006A AC LINE CONDITIONER, WHICH REGULATES AND FILTERS OUT PRIME POWER TRANSIENTS.
