Either during manufacture or sometime in its life the 40V power supply was connected to a wrong tap on the transformer. This is where I moved the bottom wire from the bottom 45V tap up so both sides of the full wave rectifier are off the 40V transformer tap. Looking at the MARCH Straight 8 the wiring error is actually where the transformer wires are screwed to the terminal block so I later rewired this one to match.
