Operating Systems
- None: BASIC, Focal, Fortran, Assemblers, and line editor were available for standalone paper tape systems. Only option if you have no mass storage.
- Disk Monitor System: Usable on minimum 4k system. Requires DF32, RF08 fixed head disk or DECtape (not TD8E).
- Pretty simple system. Fortran, Assemblers, and line editor available.
- OS/8: Probably most popular operating system.
- Requires 8k and a mass storage device. Has handlers which allows device independence.
- COS: Commercial operating system. Used with DIBOL language.
- CAPS-8: Used with special dual computer controlled data cassette drive. The cassettes were like normal tape, not block oriented like DECtapes.
- RTS-8: Real time operating system. Can run OS/8 as a task.
- Other operating systems existed. Various groups created operating systems to meet their needs.
Notes:
Have played some with standalone. Need real retro desire to use it for much. Mass storage makes life much nicer.
Used DMS with my DF32's.
Haven't used RTS-8
